Huron Heat Midget BB team claims Ontario gold - April 11, 2019
BY DENNY SCOTT
The Huron Heat Midget BB squad, one of two Heat teams in the year-end provincial tournament over the weekend, were named Ontario champions, finishing off a great season.
The Midget BB team bested the Lakeshore Lighting by a score of 4-1 on April 7, completing a five-game tournament sweep to be named the best in the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) Provincial tournament.
The squad bested the North Bay Ice Boltz 5-1 earlier on April 7 to earn the berth in the championship round. Earlier in the three-day tournament the squad bested the Markham Stoufville Stars 2-1, the Durham West Lightning 3-1, the Mount Forest Rams 3-1 and the Scarborough Sharks 1-0.
The win was one of three impressive accolades the team earned over the year, including winning the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League (LLFHL) championships late last month and winning the International Silver Stick in Sarnia this past January.
The Bantam BB team was also competing in the OWHA Provincials over the weekend, but didn’t have quite the same luck.
The squad ended their tournament run with a 2-1 loss against the Kingston Ice Wolves on April 6. Earlier that day, the team had bested the Stoney Creek Sabres 2-0.
On April 5, the Bantam BB Heat bested the Brantford Ice Cats 4-1, and started the tournament with a 2-2 tie with the Toronto Leaside Wildcats.
The Huron Heat club’s tryouts for the 2019/2020 season are just around the corner, with the first ice time scheduled for April 23 in Goderich. For more information, visit huronheat.com
