Despite great optimism going into the tournament, Shawn and Katie Cottrill failed to make the finals of the 2019 Mixed Doubles Curling Championships held last week.
The Belgrave-area couple, representing Team Ontario, finished sixth in Pool ‘A’ of the event, held in Fredericton, New Brunswick March 19-24.
The Cottrills finished the tournament with two wins, conceding two matches and three losses.
Their first game, against Tyler Tardi and Dezaray Hawes, was a 8-6 loss. Next, the Cottrills posted an 8-6 win over Edmund MacDonald and Alison Griffin, then conceded an 8-5 match against Cody Tanaka and Park Catera.
In Draw 7, the Cottrills were edged out 7-6 by Emilie and Robert Desjardins, then posted an 8-5 win over Kyle Doering and Ashley Groff.
Draw 11 saw the Cottrills face off against Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman, who edged them out 6-5 and in their final game, in Draw 13, the Cottrills conceded a 9-3 match to Steve Laycock and Kristen Streifel.
Gallant and Peterman would go on to win the tournament, earning the right to represent Canada in international mixed double curling play.
