Clinton Raceway brings thrills of horseracing to county

Lovers of horse racing and spending a few dollars backing their favourite horse generally find their way to Clinton on summer Sunday afternoons.

This year there will be weekly racing beginning at 1:30 p.m. from May 20 to September 2 with 10 races, and there’s no admission charge or parking fee. Attendance generally ranges from 300-500.

Because Clinton is a small venue than some of the larger tracks such as London, patrons are able to take behind-the-scenes tours with racetrack staff, even going upstairs to the lofty perch of the judges and track announcer.

For those who bring their kids, there’s a nearby playground and Clinton’s swimming pool. Meanwhile, those 18 years of age and older can place bets of $2 or more on their favourite horse.

Clinton Raceway was started by the Clinton Kinsmen and Kinettes who turned its administration over to a volunteer board of directors in 1982.

With the Super Sunday Show offering games, trivia, and prizes between each race, there is a lot of action to keep people of all ages entertained. Local organizations also host fundraisers almost every Sunday at the track, including a kids’ day in August, the Annual Charity Driver’s Challenge, and Legend’s Day.

For more information on the Clinton Raceway, the racetrack’s website offers a list of upcoming events and fundraisers at www.clintonraceway.com.
